Soliciting Summer Reading Suggestions...

I typically get a little over zealous in the number of books I can read in the summer, but I do have a lot of time. Books I'm considering right now:

A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
The Hobbit By J.R.R. Tolkien
1984 by George Orwell
The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano
The House of Spirits by Isabel Allende
American Pastoral by Philip Roth

Recommendations? Comments on these choices?

An updated official list with pictures coming soon...

Do you like mysteries? I like them for beach reading. I picked up "In the Woods" by Irish author Tana French. It won an Edgar award in 2007. I like quick reads like that for the summer!

I'd also recommend My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult-especially in light of the movie coming out June 26. I'm in the middle of it now, and despite my feeling that I wouldn't like it, I am unable to put it down.

I also recently read The Reader (academy award film this year) by Bernard something. It was a quick read, but I didn't really like it too much.

I just finished the Time Travelers Wife...It was one of the most bizarre books I have ever read, ever.
How's that for a recommendation?

I vote for "House of the Spirits" (which I may have recommended, so my vote may not count) and "1984!" I reread 1984 last year, and now I see allusions to it in half of the books and articles I read. It's amazing(ly creepy).

I am thinking about Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. A community of parents in the area were upset that this book was on the summer reading list. I am curious, a: why the teachers picked the book, and b: why the parents were peeved. the description sounds intriguing.

Also finally reading Midnight's Children. It is fantastic so far. Very Gabriel Garcia Marquez and his epic family tale.
